Position
This position is located in CDC’s Office of the Deputy Director for Non-Infectious Diseases (ODDNID), National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC), Division of Violence Prevention (DVP). DVP is committed to stopping violence before it begins. The Division’s work in violence prevention involves:
- Monitoring violence-related behaviors, injuries, and deaths;
- Conducting research on the factors that put people at risk or protect them from violence;
- Developing and evaluating the effectiveness of violence prevention strategies, programs, and policies;
- Helping state and local partners plan, implement, and evaluate prevention programs; and
- Conducting research on the dissemination and implementation of evidence-based prevention strategies, programs, and policies and ensuring their widespread adoption.
Through its programs and initiatives, DVP works with national organizations, state and local health agencies, researchers, and other partners to develop, implement, and promote effective violence prevention programs, practices, and policies.
DVP’s Research and Evaluation Branch (REB) plans, directs and conducts etiologic studies, effectiveness research, dissemination/implementation research, and rigorous program evaluations focusing on the prevention of violence, including, but not limited to, adverse childhood experiences, child abuse and neglect, child sexual abuse, community violence including firearm violence, elder abuse, intimate partner violence including teen dating violence, sexual violence, and youth violence.
Job Description
DVP is seeking highly qualified candidates for a full-time Senior Service Fellow position as a Behavioral Scientist. The ideal candidate will have research experience and subject matter expertise in community violence, including knowledge of victimization and offending by high-risk groups and preventive interventions to reduce serious and lethal violence in communities, and the broader field of youth violence prevention.
Community violence is violence between individuals who are unrelated, and who may or may not know each other, generally taking place outside the home. Examples of community violence include youth violence such as assaults or fights among groups, and shootings in public areas.

DVP defines youth violence as “the intentional use of physical force or power to threaten or harm others by young people ages 10-24. It typically involves young people hurting peers who are unrelated to them and who they may or may not know well. Youth violence can include fighting, bullying, threats with weapons, and gang-related violence. A young person can be involved with youth violence as a victim, offender, or witness.”
Exposure to, and involvement in community violence, is a serious public health problem and an adverse childhood experience (ACE) that can have long-term impact on health and well-being. The good news is community violence and ACEs are preventable.
Duties
The incumbent will:
- Design and conduct scientific studies and research using behavioral and social science perspectives for the primary prevention of violence, with a focus on the prevention of community violence and its consequences, especially including the prevention of youth violence.
- Apply expertise to collect, analyze and interpret complex data from diverse sources, using appropriate quantitative, qualitative and/or mixed methods.
- Independently assess and document accomplishments and recommend changes in processes, procedures and/or policies to improve the effectiveness of violence prevention strategies and approaches.
- Prepare scientific and other articles and technical reports for peer-review publication and presentation at local, state and national workshops and conferences.
- Use comprehensive conceptual frameworks, interpret, and apply guidelines, assess program effectiveness and analyze and resolve challenging issues and problems.
- Collaborate with internal staff and external government agencies, private organizations, and other stakeholders to develop and accomplish program objectives.
- Provide technical assistance and consulting, and scientific oversight of complex and innovative violence prevention surveillance, research, or evaluation projects.
- Identify and define the behavioral aspects of violence prevention using theory-based paradigms from the scientific literature.
- Support the mentoring and professional development of students, fellows, junior staff and/or partners.
Basic Qualifications
Degree: major study in an academic field related to the behavioral or social sciences; or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.
OR
Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.
Additional Qualifications:
- Doctoral degree in psychology, sociology, criminology, public health, epidemiology, economics, or related field, and
- One year of postdoctoral experience at or above the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service or its equivalent with state or local government, the private sector, or nongovernmental organizations.
Highly qualified candidates would possess the following:
- Experience and subject matter expertise in community violence prevention research, including the broader field of youth violence prevention
- At least three years of experience in the design, implementation, and/or evaluation of prevention programs, practices, or public policies to solve public health problems
- Demonstrated capability to provide expert advice and consultation to research and non-research partners on the design, implementation, and/or evaluation of prevention programs, practices, and policies
- A track record of scientific productivity as exemplified by scientific publications and other evidence of effective written communication skills
- Expertise and experience in communicating scientific concepts, such as through conference presentations
- Ability to collaborate with other scientific and professional staff on behavioral and social science research
